Although incompressible plane channel flow is one of the canonical
examples of shear flow instability, the way transition sets in
such a system is far from being well understood. As in other
wall-bounded flows, the lowest Reynolds numbers at which turbulence is
observed in numerics or in experiments remains a puzzle for
theoreticians because of the unexplained intermittent large-scale
dynamics. In this talk I will review some of the latest development on
the topic using ideas by using large-scale direct numerical simulations
and by borrowing from dynamical system theories and statistical
physics.
