Inspired by the morphing ability of living organisms, physicists and engineers are now trying to design structures that change shape in a controlled manner, the so-called ’shape morphing structures'. I will present two strategies allowing thin plates to shape morph. The first one uses Elasticae : we show how one can pre-cut flat plates so that they deform into controlled 3D shapes when compressed. The second one relies on the multistability of dimpled plates, a thin plate with soft shells imbedded in. After discussing the bi-stability of shells, I will show how inverting shells affects the overall shape of the plate.
