From bubbles to drops: navigating scales and numbers
The ubiquity of bubbles in nature and industry is not to demonstrate:
underneath waves, in oxygenation and degassing processes, in foams, etc,
their force may reside in their large numbers more than in their size,
usually small. One of their many fascinating features is their ability
to produce drops, their exact opposite, when they burst. To reach this
point, a suspended liquid film, a stable shape that can sustain surface
waves, has to rupture and fragment. I will present a handful of results
along this pathway, from the forced destabilization of a suspended
liquid film to the production of drops and aerosols by interacting
bursting bubbles.
