Numerical simulation of combustion, are we doing it right?
Driven by industrial interests, numerical simulation of combustion has been a rapidly growing field aiming at reducing the cost of experimentations and probing difficult to measure phenomena. Several basic assumptions in the field are based on theory related to simple fuels, such as methane, and simple oxidisers, mainly air. However because of the need to find “greener” combustion systems, the chemical compounds and the systems they are burned into become increasingly complex. As such, their is a need to take a step back and question if the assumptions and correlations we are taking for granted are still valid and justified within this increasingly complex research topic. The presentation will show how using new frameworks can shed some light on more generic results when comparing complex fuels. Strategies to address biases between experiment and simulations will also be presented.
